Why Energy Usage Insights Matter in Strata

As the cost of living continues to rise and technology makes energy data more accessible, understanding how energy is consumed has become increasingly important. This is especially true for people living in strata properties who receive electricity through embedded networks. Too often, these residents do not have the same level of visibility over their energy use as households with a direct retail supply. Improving access to energy usage insights is a key step toward fairness, transparency, and better energy outcomes for strata communities.

The importance of access to energy data in strata

Energy insights empower residents to take control of their consumption and costs. For occupants within embedded networks, limited or unclear data can make it difficult to identify usage patterns, manage household budgets, or take advantage of renewable energy options such as solar. Ensuring access to accurate and timely energy information is therefore not just a technical consideration, but an essential part of supporting residents during periods of increasing financial pressure. Furthermore as regulation comes into effect, it will become mandatory for certain information to be provided to energy consumers.

Key considerations for energy data access

There are several common challenges within strata environments that can limit the usefulness of energy usage information.

One of the most significant issues is insufficient or outdated metering. In many buildings, meters do not provide granular or real time data, which can result in residents receiving estimated bills instead of bills based on actual consumption. Estimated billing removes the ability to understand true usage and can lead to disputes or mistrust in the billing process.

Another challenge arises when common area energy charges are bundled together with individual apartment charges. When this occurs, it becomes difficult for occupants to distinguish between their personal energy consumption and the energy used to power shared facilities such as lifts, lighting, or pools. This lack of separation reduces transparency and makes it harder for residents to understand or influence their own usage.

Advanced metering infrastructure addresses many of these challenges. Advanced meters can be read remotely, eliminating the need for onsite meter reading and reducing operational costs. More importantly, remote readable meters provide accurate and timely data, removing the reliance on estimated readings and ensuring residents receive bills based on their actual energy use.

Benefits of having energy usage insights

Access to detailed energy usage insights delivers clear benefits to both property owners and tenants.

With accurate data, residents gain a better understanding of when and how they consume energy. This enables more informed decision making, such as identifying high usage appliances, adjusting behaviours during peak periods, or shifting energy intensive tasks to off peak times where tariffs allow. Over time, these small changes can lead to meaningful reductions in energy costs.

Usage insights also support better engagement between residents, strata managers, and owners’ corporations. Transparent energy data builds trust, reduces billing disputes, and provides a clear foundation for conversations about energy efficiency upgrades or changes to building infrastructure.

For properties with access to solar energy or other embedded generation, usage insights are even more valuable. When residents can see how and when solar energy is being generated and consumed, they can adjust their habits to maximise the use of renewable energy. This might include running appliances during daylight hours or aligning usage with peak solar production. The result is lower grid consumption, reduced energy costs, and improved environmental outcomes for the entire building.

Supporting better outcomes for strata communities

Energy usage insights are no longer a luxury. They are a practical necessity for modern strata living. By addressing metering limitations, improving transparency, and adopting advanced metering technologies, strata communities can provide residents with the same level of information and control that is expected in single dwelling homes.

Ultimately, better access to energy data supports fairer billing, informed decision making, and more sustainable energy use. As pressures on household budgets continue, empowering strata residents with meaningful energy insights is an important step toward more resilient and future ready communities.
